I had a client ask me the other day how I specifically stay in check with my diet and overall body fat levels, without constantly tracking my food on MyFitnessPal. How? I liberated myself from hunger, focused more on satiety, compared to just calories and prioritised quality over the quantity. One the most pivotable points in the change of my diet and lifestyle….was becoming fat adapted. For my entire life, I have been tied to food. I could rarely go longer than 3-4 hours without food throughout the day. If I had missed a meal, hunger pains would kick in, energy lows would occur almost on cue at the 3.5hr mark and overall always felt like I was tied to my meal schedule. Not to mention this made me a pain to live with because if I hadn’t eaten I was always “hangry” (hungry/angry lol). Now this is not to excuse calories as an important variable to consider when talking about body composition changes, but my biggest sustainable change came from when I focused more on what made me full, gave me energy for hours without the need of constant dietary energy (eating food). So in essence….it gave me the control that I needed to eat the appropriate amount for me to stay lean. Consuming an over amount of carbohydrates throughout the day would lead to constant hunger and unstable energy levels. This is not to state that “carbs are bad”, I just feel that for me and my experiences with “yo-yo dieting”…..if I can consume a diet that makes me full and can eat when I want to, rather then when I need to. Nothing like feeling full, satisfied, energised and waking up the next day staying at your goal body fat levels, without the need of a life-time of meticulous meal prep or food logging. One size 100% does not fit all. Any good coach realises this. From an early age, I have fostered a multitude of interests. I love learning. It always starts with curiosity, and then a simple trial , and then ideation of how to tweak that trial and start changing things to see different results. Since early childhood, and as I got into food, I wanted to understand how the food on our tables gets there, and the processes that originate them. So, I started planting little things here and there and this this some of the progess I've made in my backyard. I will admit that while I always had the inkling to try growing my own food, the possibility that there may be a food scarce( #TheMartian and #thewalkingdead ) kinda gave me the right jolt to get started.
